The Sherman family has always concentrated on using, developing and breeding top Jersey sires. Donnie's father and uncle were pioneers in artificial insemination, having the first bull to be collected at the University of California-Davis in the 1940s. Today D&E Jerseys uses service sires that are among the top for JPI, with emphasis on profitable production, functional type and lower levels of inbreeding. About 40 percent of the herd matings are made using young sires. D&E Jerseys is a member of Liberty Jersey Sires, Dixieland Jersey Sires and Jerseyland Jersey Sires, of which they are a founding member. Donnie has been a member of Jerseyland's Sire Selection Committee from the beginning. D&E Jerseys also uses young sires from Select Sires and Alta Genetics.
Currently, Avi-Lanche Daniel
Borden is on the list of AJCA Active A.I. Jersey Bulls.
Several other D&E and Avi-Lanche-bred bulls are in young sire sampling programs and awaiting proofs.
Some of the up-and-coming D&E
Jersey young females are shown below.
